Is vanilla AIP?
I knew you’d ask! That’s one of the most common (and most confusing) questions in AIP groups. Angie has cleared up the confusion about vanilla and a few other tricky AIP foods before. But to summarize: vanilla extract made with gluten-free alcohol (I make my own with Three Hunters vodka, a vodka made with berry and grapes – not potato) is okay for cooked recipes (the alcohol will cook off), pure vanilla powder is okay for cold prepared recipes, and the seed scrapings (the seeds are too small to chew) should be okay for most people.
Clear as mud? 😉
The vanilla used in this “recipe” is simply infusing some flavor/aromatics in the salt. I do the same with our organic evaporated cane juice.
What you’ll need:
- Pour the salt in your air tight container of choice.
Cut the vanilla bean in half and split each half lengthwise.
Using a paring knife, scrape out the seeds and place on top of the salt.
Bury the vanilla pods in the salt.
Cover and shake well.
Let sit for about two weeks before using.
This also makes a great culinary gift!
